You know that you are truly, truly a grandmother…a Mi-ma when you will publicly embarrass yourself without apologizing for the sake of your grandchild. Like when my Grandpa Lamb was determined to catch the jelly fish washing ashore along the beach at Santa Cruz because his grand daughter wanted it. No, not me. I was much too sensible to have use for a supposedly dead jellyfish, but my sister Valerie wanted it so Grandpa set out to get it for her. Ending our beach trip in the local ER was so awesome! It was that day that I learned one should pee on jellyfish stings.

Eww!

But now, as a grandmother, I get it. The realization that this is something YOUR GRANDCHILD must have…wants…needs you toss aside all sensibilities because YOUR GRANDBABY wants it….DAMMIT! Which would explain my behavior at a local children’s clothing store before the birth of my second grandchild. Holly and I were shopping for a winter coat for Hazel when what do I discover but the most amazing white, furry, soft, fuzzy baby hat ever! Yes, I HAD to have this for my unborn grandchild. It was the LAST ONE and it was 0-3 mos size…it was the LAST ONE! It was on clearance and it was FURTHER MARKED DOWN 40%!!!!! I HAD to claim this for Fallon!

I grabbed it. I clutched it lest someone try to wrestle it away from me. I’m sure I resembled Golum as I stroked it. I will deny that I was muttering “my precious” while I stroked it, petted it, guarded it from any other shoppers who might desire THE LAST WHITE FUZZY, FURRY 0-3 MOS SIZED HAT. I paid for it and IT WAS MINE…er, it was Fallon’s! My precious grandbaby’s head would never, ever be cold thanks to her Mi-ma!

Fallon, naturally, is truly grateful. She knows, understands and (at this tender age) accepts the depths of her Mi-ma’s love. The fact that she resembles Finn of Adventure Time makes this all the more acceptable here under the Big Top.

Someday…someday I shall regale with Fallon of the tales of how I wrestled her fuzzy, furry, 0-3 mos sized hat away from the maddening crowds of shoppers in that Crazy 8′s store…and she will probably loudly sigh, rolling her eyes in the direction of her mother who will nudge her to hug me and thank me. And THAT is why I do what I do as her and Hazel!

Justifying once again the time I ~~waste~~ spend on Pinterest I had to try something different for breakfast.

Breakfast Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Maple Syrup

Y’all are either saying “Ew!” or you are reacting like I did saying out loud “I must try this!”. Trust me, try this. I mean, a perfectly golden brown toasty, buttery grilled cheese sandwich filled with ooey gooey melted cheese served for breakfast, smothered in maple syrup. What’s not to love about this?

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter, room temperature
2 slices bread, day old
2 ounces cheese, grated/shredded, room temperature
maple syrup to taste

Directions

Heat a pan over medium heat.
Completely butter one side of each slice of bread.
Place one slice of bread in the pan, buttered side down, sprinkle on the cheese and top with the remaining slice of bread, buttered side up
Turn the heat down a notch and cook until golden brown, about 2-4 minutes.
Flip and cook until golden brown on the other side, about 2-4 minutes.
Serve with maple syrup.

OMG!…get into mah mouth…NOW!

I invited Hazel in enjoying this new delicious breakfast treat because she is always hungry and because she just so happened to be at the Big Top when I decided to make this.

She declared it to be really sticky because when Mi-ma told her it was a breakfast grilled cheese sandwich she concluded that she must eat it the way she eats a lunch grilled cheese sandwich. She also declared it to be YUMMY after she had literally eaten every last bit and drop of maple syrup. As for me, well, it is a good thing that I run about 15 miles or so a week because that is heavenly delicious-ness I hope to have for breakfast sometime soon…again!

Weeks…okay, MONTHS later I am FINALLY moving forward with the big project that is my staircase bannister. I’m blaming the hot summer and fall, back to school, Halloween, the Coming Attraction that became known as Fallon, the holidays, the post holidays packing of holiday decorations, Jodie’s crazy work and dancing schedule that requires me to be her personal taxi, babysitting the grands at least twice a week…and any other excuse I can come up with right now to explain why six months later I am still working on painting the staircase bannister.

Well one coat on one small part of the staircase bannister and yes, I am definitely committed here. That is what my darling husband said when he saw what I had done today. I am also quite aware that I have missed a spot or more. My darling husband also noticed that too.

Sigh!

Stay tuned…hopefully I won’t be updating this project in June.

a friend indeed

Hazel has announced that she has a friend, a friend none of us can see. His name is Keycore…at least that is how her mommy spells it. Hazel declared that the correct spelling is “A to Y and C to H“.

Of course.

Where does he live? Inside the Earth…duh!

Oh, and he has blue hair. How awesome is it to have a friend who has blue hair? You’d know if you had such a friend.

Finally, Hazel’s mommy asks how old is Keycore (A to Y and C to H).

Hazel: “5 o’clock, why?”
Mommy: “He’s 5 o’clock years old!?”
Hazel: “Yes mom. What does it matter?”

Indeed.
