for our friend Amber

March 23, 2008 · 4 Comments

Seriously, this is not to see what traffic we can generate here by people searching for “girls with finger-staches”. No, this is for our friend, Amber.

Just look at what you started, little girl! First the college crowd, Fox News, Jonah Hill on SNL and Conan and now the Big Top! It’s like a freakin’ phenomenon! You’re practically mainstream!

had a bad day

March 18, 2008 · 2 Comments

Yes I did.

I drove most of Sunday night into a very strong, gusty wind. It was so good to be home back under the Big Top, where I belong. But Monday I woke up with incredibly sore hands, arms shoulders. LIke I said, it was a very strong, gusty wind I was driving against for over six hours.

Naturally this would mean that Monday night at work would not be an easy, relaxed night.

Naturally!

I started the night learning that a patient I had before who was critical but doing okay for an itty-bitty baby had died suddenly over the weekend. This only helped to weigh me down as we were very busy with several admissions and missed breaks. I’m not a very happy, pretty person to work with when my blood sugar is lower than a hypoglycemic baby born from a mama with out of control gestational diabetes. I do believe that my co-workers finally believe my stories about how ugly I can get now.

But today has to be, will be a good day. My girls went grocery shopping last night armed with their very own meal plan for the week…meals they intend to make. Now they understand the first step to making mama happy. Perhaps after a good day’s sleep, Tuesday will be a better day. It has to be. It will be.

Time for Vampira the Night Shift Nurse to go to bed!

more mother-daughter bonding goodness

January 21, 2008 · 4 Comments

And it goes on and on and on which is what happens when one has four daughters. This past weekend it was all about Jodie and today was Holly, Zoë’s and Abby’s turn to revel in the mommy-daughter time with me.

Winter Formal is coming and it is to be our first formal here under the Big Top because big sister Holly just didn’t do those kind of school events back when she was in high school…it was all part of the rebellion I guess. But she seemed to be as excited as I am and came along to offer her opinion and advice. Four sarcastic, related females in the Junior dress department at Macy’s made for a lot of fun. We found some potential yeses and some definite nos which can be viewed here and, after some discussion, giggles and teasing, settled on two lovely, elegant dresses that compliment my lovely young daughters so well. We also had fun checking out some dresses in the WTH? category. That would be the category where one wonders what the hell was the designer thinking and who the hell would wear that dress. Think 80s style bridesmaid dresses…OMG, people, they are baaaa-aaack! Zoë actually tried one on just for the fun of it. I am pretty sure I attended a wedding in 1988 where the bridesmaids wore that particular one. Thank goodness I wasn’t one of the bridesmaids.

Then it was off to a maternity shop because my 18 weeks pregnant daughter is growing and hungry all the time.

Really, have you ever seen a more adorable pregnant lady?

The coming attraction is clearly growing. While Holly and I checked the good, the bad and the WTH? in maternity fashion, her sisters roamed the mall. I think the maternity store sales lady scared them off when she asked if they needed help finding a nursing bra. I must say that overall maternity fashion is so much more flattering than it was in my gestating days. I like that it celebrates a pregnant woman’s shape and her growing baby bump. Still it is challenging to find things that my edgy daughter would like to wear. Maybe Hot Topic, Forever 21 and Urban Outfitters needs to consider expanding into maternity fashions. Still she found four tops that looked absolutely adorable on her.

After a lunch (because we have to feed the “Inner Craving”), it was off to Babys R Us to set up a baby registry for this wonderful coming attraction. We don’t know the sex just yet, but she was anxious to get started on a registry knowing there is a lot of STUFF a baby needs and maybe doesn’t need. It’s a start. Once she knows the sex I am sure it will grow just like she is growing. Of course everyone is invited to the baby shower! It will be a big party, I promise.

It was a fun day to be a mother and daughters. One of those days where stories and laughter is shared and memories are made.

daddy quote

July 29, 2007 · No Comments

For Allen and all the other fathers of daughters out there.
Bill says:

Nothing says father-daughter bonding more than shopping for a box of tampons!

and Holly adds:
or bra-shopping!

This is after all, the house that estrogen built! You have to have a sense of humor if you possess XY chromosones and live here under the Big Top.

I am blogging for good all day

where there is a mirror…

July 29, 2007 · No Comments

It wouldn’t be a stay in a hotel without my girls’ powder room self portrait.
left to right: Zoë-15, Holly-20, Abby-13
As Daniel would say, they’re silly!

Me, I blame the mother for this bit of silliness. Young parents take note, this is what can happen when you introduce your young babies to a mirror. They love to see the reflection because “they are oh-so pretty!”.
Well, they are, you know.

I
‘m blogging for good all day.

smells like (pre) teen spirit

August 22, 2006 · 8 Comments

A very strange phenomenon will soon strike The Big Top for the very first time. Starting from November 9 through December 19 I will be the mother of THREE teenagers.
No expressions of sympathy are needed but cash donations will be graciously accepted. I wonder if I added a PayPal button to my blog would people donate?…nevermind!
Actually I am not too stressed about this unusual event in our circus life because it is short-lived. I mean, it is only a month. But it will return and stay much longer. I know this is true because I can sense it. I can hear it, see it and, yes, I can smell it.
What is it?
Pre-teen spirit. It’s baaaa-aaaackkkkk!
For the fourth time, I am witness to one of my sweet, adoring angel-girls morph into this thing that is a mouthy and scummy creature. Suddenly this child of mine wants to wear the same article of clothing on a daily basis until it literally stands up on its own and while she showers daily I find myself wondering if soap and shampoo has actually made contact with her person. Of course the certain pair of shorts are changed and tossed into the hamper with a loud dramatic sigh. The shower gets used again only because mom threatens to go in there and scrub the kid clean if she doesn’t.
She suddenly has become the princess of the snappy comebacks and dramatic responses with her sisters. When the phone rings, it isn’t always for mom, dad the cellphone deprived Abby, it is sometimes for Jodie. The one-sided conversation I hear is so familiar to me by now. When she bought a Tigerbeat! magazine (who knew that was still around) and abandoned Radio Disney for channel surfing through the local pop radio stations I knew I was in trouble.
Pre-teen spirit is back in my house.
Bonding with parents of my kids’ friends I can assure you this is a normal thing and it is NOT exclusively a girl thing. Boys get it too. They tend to be stinkier and after chaperoning a few junior high age youth events I would suggest to parents of boys to occasionally check their underwear. Trust me.
Pre-teen spirit is not pretty. Pre-teen spirit is very awkward. But pre-teen spirit is very necessary. The hormones are starting to rage, the bodies are changing and those itty-bitty independence muscles are flexing. Thankfully, pre-teen spirti doesn’t last too long. It’s just the rehearsal for the next stage and ready or not, it is coming again under The Big Top. My fourth baby girl is growing up which means in three short years I will, once again, have THREE teenagers in the house.

the very beautiful smiles cruise redoux

August 9, 2006 · 5 Comments

Here it is, our family’s beautiful smiles cruise.
Jodie recently got her braces and she is absolutely thrilled. Like her sisters, she sports a lovely, metallic smile that reminds me of those balmy, tropical ocean breezes. I ask the girls to smile often just so I can close my eyes and picture myself there. They usually will reign me back in with an annoyed, “Mom!”
The Mexican Riviera will still be there when my girls someday in the future will flash their dazzling, beautiful smiles that result from the braces that we chose to buy instead of a cruise. In the meantime, I will just close my eyes for a moment and picturee the deep blue ocean and hear the sounds of the cruise ship around me as I sip my tropical drink with the umbrella in it.

So beautiful!

I feel pretty….

August 5, 2006 · 2 Comments

It would seem that beautiful people have more girls than boys.

It must be true! Take that all you school yard bullies who said I was ugly!
Bill and I have always maintained that we have perfected girls. Perhaps it wasn’t just luck after all…if you believe this research.
I would have to say that this little guy is beautiful too. Even with his dirty face.

Okay, technically we don’t share the same genes. But he sure is beautiful. Just like his sisters.

Overheard Thursday Thirteen # 26

August 3, 2006 · 87 Comments

So here I sit trying to come up with a clever list for this week’s Thursday Thirteen and I am stumped. I am tired. I have a headache and my mind is mushy. Each list I start has only 5 or 6 on them.
Aaaaaaggghhh!
The pressure.
I was featured last week at ThursdayThirteen.com : Official Thursday Thirteen Blog Meme Hub so I feel like I have to be clever this week. I mean, what if someone comes back and finds my list boring and doesn’t leave a comment. Oh the shame of it all!
Aaaaaaggghhh!
It’s no good. I am blank.
I am ready to give up.
And then, I hear a conversation coming from the kitchen between my four darling daughters. I so enjoy listening to the thoughts that they share with one another. Here is their most recent exchange.

The Last Thirteen Things I Overheard My Girls Saying:

  1. Smell this
  2. Eww, no
  3. It’s clean
  4. No it’s not
  5. Uh-huh. I know it’s clean because I washed my hair today
  6. That’s gross!
  7. It’s just ear wax
  8. No, it’s that stuff that gets stuck in your earrings
  9. Ewww! Dad, I smelled her earring things
  10. It’s not earring things, it’s ear cheese
  11. Ewww, that is so gross
  12. But you know what’s cool? She found her eyebrows.
  13. I sure did! Look, they’re right here!

Did you know that THIS WEEK is the Thursday Thirteen one year anniversary? Well it is. It is also my 26th edition which makes it 6 months of my playing. Now you must celebrate by playing along.
The purpose of this weekly meme is to get to know one another better. Anyone can play. Leave your link below and DEFINITELY leave a comment.

Now to go get some q-tips and take care of some ear cheese.

HELP!

August 1, 2006 · 8 Comments

I have been trapped in hormone hell all day!
No, not me. That was a couple of weeks ago.
It’s two of my not-so-darling-at-the-moment daughters. Now I truly understand why some species eat their young.
I think I might grind up two or three or four bottles of Midol and mix it into their food. There really can’t be anything too wrong in doing that, could there? Don’t answer that, please.
