naming the name police’s grandchild

May 15, 2008 · 10 Comments

So what is Holly naming the coming attraction? One thing I know for sure is what she isn’t naming her baby girl.

The Social Security Administration’s results for the top baby names in 2007 really weren’t too much of a surprise except for:
Good Lord, people, people, people….Neveah (Heaven spelled backwards) is number 31? Y’all are scaring me, really. Even the misspelled version “Neveah” is there at #891.

Holly has alreadychosen her baby girl’s name and while it is on the top 100 baby girl names of 2007, it is not as popular as Emily or various, assorted spellings of Jaiden or, thank goodness, Neveah. Like her mama, she has chosen a name that has meaning significant to her. The name is a little bit off the mainstream path, like the names of my girls were at the time they were born. Yes, I know “Abigail” and “Zoe” are rather popular now but not so much when my Abigael and my Zoë were born. I like to imagine, in my own fantasy world, that they became trendy AFTER the girls were born. I know for a fact, that there is one 15 year old girl out there somewhere who shares the same name as my Zoë because her mother, while keeping vigil over her un-named baby girl in the NICU, loved it and what it meant. Of course, after that I concluded that folks heard me calling after my girls and thought to themselves that this would be THE name for their child. I’m okay with it, really. I mean I really don’t have any control over the name a child is blessed/cursed with. Do I? But someday… I really do want to be the name police around these parts.

So how do folks select the name that will be their child’s for the rest of their life; the name that will determine their success/failure in the world or junior high campus; the name that, in a way, defines who they are? I wonder sometimes and sometimes it keeps me up nights wondering even more.

Neveah? Sincere? Names that rhyme with “maiden”.

For myself, the names of my children as well as the origins and meanings of those names have great significance in their lives and my life at the time they were born. They were the perfect fit for each one of them from the moment they were born and onward through the classroom and beyond. Holly, being her mama’s daughter, put just as much thought and energy into selecting the name for her coming attraction. The name’s meaning and significance to Holly was a big part of her decision to choose it and although the little darling has not made her official debut, I would say it suits her well already. Some might like it, some will LOVE it, some will hate it and some might even “steal” it, but for no one but Holly will it have the significance and meaning that it has for her, her family and her daughter. That is what is ultimately in a name, the name of a newborn child. Yes, grudgingly I will admit, even for those who decide that Neveah is the absolute perfect name for their precious child. Yes, I was gritting my teeth as I typed that last sentence.

No, I am not going to reveal the name of the coming attraction yet. Everyone will just have to wait until the coming attraction comes to the Big Top. Good things come to those who wait. But in an effort to entertain the bored, gestating daughter in those last few weeks of her pregnancy, you can offer up your suggestions for what she should consider for her baby girl. Holly regularly reads Mommy~Dearest’s blog because she does care what I am thinking and she is restless and bored as this pregnancy races into the homestretch so c’mon, let’s entertain her with suggested names for the Coming Attraction. Just remember she is as hormonal as she is bored. Who knows? You just might cause her to change her mind.

I feel so shiny and new! I jumped into the twitter pool. Hopefully I will learn to swim faster there than I did in real life.

35 weeks growth

May 15, 2008 · 7 Comments

This week the coming attraction is a little bit more than 19 inches long and the finishing touches on all her organs are being completed.

Meanwhile, Holly, is not enjoying the heat wave we have had this past week. I remind her that it could be worse, she could be living here in the Central Valley while she is nine months pregnant AND it is August!

You might say a little prayer for her today. Yes Holly, I said say a little prayer! Get over it! Holly has a mole on her neck that has grown exponentially over the last couple of weeks and then started bleeding. Her midwife took one look at it earlier this week and referred her immediately to a dermatologist. She is going to have the mole removed and biopsied this afternoon.
